Active scanning is dangerous in OT: a probe that a modern IT device shrugs off can fault a legacy PLC, HMI, or safety controller. Access Gate builds the inventory the opposite way, by passively observing the traffic already on the network, so it never sends an active probe to a production asset.

Can I inventory OT assets without scanning?

Yes. Access Gate discovers assets by passively observing existing network traffic, so it never sends an active probe to a production PLC, HMI, or safety controller, and there is no risk of triggering a fault.

Why is active scanning risky in OT?
